The Marlborough Sounds is an ideal place for bird watching trips, a sheltered inland waterway that offers an amazing diversity of bird life. The first birds that we encounter are usually the Australasian Gannet, witness their amazing vertical diving, we can steam up into Anatohia bay and study their colony (only one in the Sounds). Fluttering Shearwaters, Blue Penguins, Shags, Oystercatchers and Terns.

The Marlborough Sounds are the only place in the world where you can observe the King Shag, they only live on the most isolated islands but a trip out to their colony is well worth the effort. A visit of Motuara Island Bird Sanctuary, is a must, the bird song is amazing. Bird watching is one activity where we welcome inclement weather because the sea birds come out in droves on rainy days!
